Shannon & Matt

We are excited to welcome to our home a boy or girl, newborn to one year, through open, semi-open or closed adoption.

Before we go any further, we believe it is imperative you know this: we are praying for you. Daily. Specifically. We are praising God for the courageous decision you’ve made to choose LIFE. We are praying for the decisions involved along the way that we will never fully be able to comprehend.

Prior to marriage, we talked extensively about our mutual desire and excitement to raise a family, pour into the next generation, and work with all of our hearts to raise our children knowing the Lord. Adoption was always part of that plan even before we married. For reasons we may never know here on earth, God chose to close Shannon’s womb for childbearing. But we can say with confidence that God does not make mistakes. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful.” Psalm 139:14-15. We wholeheartedly believe His will is “good, pleasing, and perfect.” (Romans 12:2).

We’re thrilled that we get to live out the Gospel through God’s calling in our lives to adopt. He’s known from the beginning of time how our story will unfold…because He wrote it! We sit waiting in excited expectation and experiencing an indescribable peace knowing our lives will one day intersect with a courageous woman who made such a beautiful decision.

In Him,
Matt & Shannon

Nothing about our story has been ordinary. Rather, it’s been extraordinary. God writes the best love stories…

Our Once-Upon-A-Time began in 2011 when Matt reached out to Shannon via an online dating site nearly 4,000 miles away, serving in the US Navy. Matt embodied the two “nevers” Shannon had established with online dating:

1. never anyone long distance and
2. never anyone in the military.

God chuckled at those stipulations, said, “Watch this,” and unfolded our most-favorite-of-all-time-in-the-history-of-ever love story ever told!

The next several months involved 6-8 hour weekly Skype sessions that laid the foundation for a beautiful friendship that would flourish into a romantic relationship months later. We cooked together over Skype (grilled cheese was a favorite!). We visited fun, silly websites and laughed together. We even watched live sporting events like the Panthers 4,000 miles away! We chose to remain just friends until we had a chance to meet face-to-face. Four months after we began talking, that chance came.

Matt came to visit and stay with Shannon’s family the week of Valentine’s Day 2012. Our first meeting was in baggage claim at the airport! We spent the week getting to know one another and building on the friendship foundation we’d already established. Within a few days, Matt expressed his desire to pursue a romantic relationship, to which Shannon ecstatically replied, “Of course!” Those next few months, Matt returned to finish up his 12 year Navy term. Nearly our entire first year was spent long distance, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way. We learned to get to know one another on a deeper level since much of our time was simply spent talking and learning about one another. We quickly became BFF’s and remain BFF’s!

God stretched us. He taught us patience. We learned to wait on Him, His will, and His timing. We married in July 2013.

We are more than husband and wife–we are truly BEST FRIENDS (and we frequently refer to each other as our “BFF!”). We have a knack for finding joy, pleasure, and fun in the simple things, as long as we are together. This means a typical date night may be as simple as walking around Target and having fun in the toy section, or as “grown up” as dinner at a nice restaurant (although we tend to get more creative with the former!).

We complement each other well. Where Matt is weak, Shannon is strong. Where Shannon is weak, Matt is strong.

  • Our favorite times of year are fall and winter. We love hiking and visiting quaint mountain towns in the fall. It’s hard to keep us indoors this time of year! We start celebrating Christmas as early as possible each year and love participating in as many Christmas festivities as possible in our area. Driving around town looking at Christmas lights and decorating (or at least attempting to decorate!) a gingerbread house are a couple of our annual traditions.
  • We collect fridge magnets from all the places we’ve traveled and for various attractions. It’s one of the many ways we try to keep memories alive and reminisce.
  • We love gumball machines and try to keep quarters with us just so we can “splurge!”
  • We probably watch a little too much Food Network! We love trying new foods at restaurants and cooking together at home.
  • We have a crazy number of matching t-shirts we’ve purchased from various attractions we’ve visited. We wear matching shirts with no shame!
  • Pigeon Forge, TN, is our favorite vacation destination.
  • Matt can fold a fitted sheet better than Martha Stewart!
  • Shannon once won a hula hoop contest after hula hooping 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Nearly all of Shannon’s family are within about 30 minutes of our home (Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins). Most of Matt’s family lives about 2 hours away. Family is a top priority for us! We talk to and spend time with our families regularly. Saturday dinner and games nights have become a weekly tradition. We have lots of laughs and make lots of memories!

What Matt says about Shannon
Shannon truly is my best friend. I love her humor, her heart for hospitality and others, and her ability to be content doing whatever. I wanted a Godly woman and after much prayer, He surely delivered. Shannon gets my goofy nature, and I feel like I can be 100% myself around her. She cares for me in a way that I’ve never felt before. Shannon has been more mature than most people her age but is also the most fun person that I’ve ever been around. Shopping together, taking mountain day trips, and enjoying outdoor fall & winter activities are some of our favorite things to do. Shannon’s strong organizational skills provide a structured and stable environment in our home life and our relationship. She pours her heart and soul into everything that she does for her family, and I absolutely love her for that. I am an extremely blessed man to have her in my life and wouldn’t want it any other way. Best friends for life!

What Shannon says about Matt

I love doing life with Matt. He is my best friend, and his quirky humor always makes me laugh. There’s no one I’d rather go shopping with, sit on the couch and watch tv with, or just hang out with than him! We’re so alike, yet so opposite. And that’s what makes us fit and work together so well. We are truly a team, and I trust him as our team leader! Some of Matt’s strengths include extending grace and exercising extreme patience. He has one of the most compassionate hearts of anyone I’ve ever known, yet he is emotionally and mentally strong. Both of these traits meld well in making him such an extraordinary Christ-filled leader of our home. Matt always goes above and beyond to build me up as his wife through words of affirmation and physical affection. More than anything, I’m thankful for how well Matt loves and leads.
